Injured goose

One mate in a pair of geese raising goslings ingested a fish hook. The goose was rescued, given x-rays and taken immediately into surgery to remove the hook. The bird was released shortly afterwards and reunited back with its family.

Fifteen years ago, an American Goldfinch hit one of our windows. It was then that I discovered Le Nichoir. To honour the Goldfinch’s life, I began volunteering as an ambulance driver for Le Nichoir and contributing my talents as a graphic designer.

The roasting business my husband and ran as a hobby evolved in 2015 into a partnership with Le Nichoir, roasting their Bird Friendly coffee. Today, I’m pleased to be crafting coffee as a means of fundraising for a cause that is close to my heart.

Orphaned flickers

A Northern Flicker mother with three nestlings was killed when the tree her nest was in was cut down. The nestlings, though, other than being a bit hungry, survived and were in good health. The young Flickers were placed in the nursery for hourly feedings of a variety of live insects. Once large enough to begin to fly, the Flickers were moved to an outdoor aviary. Weeks later, the three siblings were released in the Clarke Sydenham Nature Reserve.

EthiSecure Services has supported Le Nichoir through annual corporate donations. We have seen the staff at Le Nichoir in action: we find them to be efficient, effective and passionate practitioners, lending their human helping hands to birds in need. Our support will continue in 2020, and we invite others to do the same.

Le Nichoir's volunteers

Le Nichoir depends on the help of volunteers to support its programs. One of our volunteers, McKenna, shares her experience a the Centre:

Le Nichoir makes me feel both accomplished and excited. Volunteering is important because volunteers contribute to the time and individual care each bird needs. I volunteer here because I love being able to see the birds’ progress and play a small part in their recovery. I also volunteer as a way to get experience with birds, as I am planning on applying to a Veterinary Medicine Program.
