We have seen an increase in childhood anxiety and social / emotional difficulties over the past year, presumably linked to the global pandemic and the social problems that have arisen from closures and isolation. We are offering workshops to child care providers to help them identify the children in their classes who are experiencing high levels of stress and anxiety. The workshops will guide the ECEs to be able to support children going through this; as well as, how to be trauma sensitive in the classroom. The workshops cover the neuroscience behind these stress responses, what is happening in the body and why this state of being is less than ideal for learning and thriving. It looks at the spectrum of behaviors that can be caused and why they can be so different from one child to the next. After childcare providers are familiar with these concepts, the second part of the workshop offers the opportunity for open discussion and teaches coping techniques and strategies.
This two part workshop touches on the basic neuroscience of stress. Learn (or be reminded) about nervous symptom responses, (fight /flight/ freeze) and the spectrum of behaviors you can expect to see in your classroom. Join the discussion about how to identify the children who are really struggling as well as, learn coping strategies to support them.
Vicky Wallace has completed her B.A. in Child and Youth Care, specializing in Mental Health, at the University of Victoria. She received my training in Play and Expressive Arts Therapy from Roehampton University in London and Play Therapy UK. Other certifications include Motivational Interviewing, Therapeutic Crisis Intervention and using Play with EMDR Therapy. Vicky is the owner and play therapist at Springfield Kids in Kelowna and she is the one of the play therapist for Playful Healing Program with Childhood Connections. Vicky is also the founder of Nourish Families Initiative through Childhood Connections.
