'Til Papa Returns Book Launch

by Connie Columbus Denesiuk

Join us for the launch of ‘Til Papa Returns, and hear from local author, Connie Columbus Denesiuk, on the inspiration behind the story and why $10 from the purchase of every book will help raise funds to support students at Okanagan College.

Tickets to the book launch are free, but we ask you to register for the event.

‘Til Papa Returns; surviving as a child refugee in WWII. The true story of Alfred Columbus.

The youngest of eight children, Alfred Columbus was learning from Papa how to farm the land their family had worked for more than 200 years. WWII changed everything; now, most of the food they worked so hard to produce was requisitioned by the government. As the terrible conflict finally drew to a close, so did Alfred’s childhood.

Evacuated with his mother to an unfamiliar city, the ten-year-old quickly adapted to his new role of family provider, capitalizing on any possible source of food to keep Mama and the refugees with whom they were housed from starving.

This is a story of courage, resiliency, determination, and – above all – hope.

About the Author

As someone passionate about learning, Connie has been involved in education for much of her life; as a School Trustee, Governor for Okanagan College, and now as Chair of the Okanagan College Foundation Board. Having recently completed her MA in Leadership, Connie also claims that the pursuit of learning is ageless!

Connie believes that “Accessibility to post-secondary learning is crucially important for people as they reach for their dreams”, which is why she is dedicating all profits from her book launch sales to support student(s) who have come to Canada as refugees. Alfred, the subject of the biography, also experienced life as a refugee but later came to Canada to pursue his dreams.
