About Habitat for Humanity Nova Scotia
Habitat for Humanity Nova Scotia is a non-profit organization that develops and advocates for affordable homeownership opportunities. Through the collaborative efforts of volunteers, donors, community partners and Habitat homeowners, we lay the foundation for better, healthier lives in Nova Scotia. Habitat homeowners volunteer 500 hours and pay an affordable, no-down-payment mortgage – geared to their income – to buy their home at fair market value.
Habitat’s model of affordable homeownership bridges a gap for people who face barriers to homeownership and who would otherwise not have an opportunity to buy a home. All Habitat homeowners go through an application process to determine their level of housing need, their ability to repay Habitat’s affordable mortgage and their willingness to partner with Habitat.
As part of the global Habitat for Humanity network, we are one of 46 affiliates in Canada and part of hundreds of affiliates across more than 70 countries. This interconnected network allows us to leverage resources, share best practices and collaborate on projects that have a meaningful impact on housing affordability worldwide.

The New Glasgow Build
Habitat for Humanity will be starting a home build project on Louis Road in New Glasgow, with an anticipated groundbreaking date in May. Through the collaborative efforts of volunteers, donors, community partners and Habitat homeowners, we will lay the foundation for better, healthier lives for a family in Pictou County.
The Tantallon Wildfire Relief Rebuild
In May 2023, Phil and Sue's lives were turned upside down when wildfires broke out in Upper Tantallon. Their home of ten years was destroyed, and, to make matters worse, an issue with their oil tank had caused their home insurance company to deny coverage, leaving them without any financial recourse. Amid the emotional turmoil of losing their home, the couple faced the additional challenge of finding new housing in a market marked by soaring rents and low vacancy.
Habitat for Humanity Nova Scotia is joining forces with the Canadian Red Cross and United Way to help Phil and Sue rebuild after more than a year of being displaced. Together, with your support, we can help Phil and Sue rebuild their lives, restore their sense of security and create a brighter future for themselves and their community.
