How We Got Started
Story ABOUT US! Handy Circle Resource Society (A little Community Organization with a Big Heart)
We have been in Prince George, British Columbia since 1985. We started in Prince George around a Kitchen Table with a group of Persons with Disabilities and Special Needs. Vivienne Candy Founder in 1983.
Years before Vivienne started the Handy Circle Promotions Society, which changed its name in 2008 to Handy Circle Resource Society. Vivienne was a traveler and hiker, she loved the outdoors. In 1983 Vivienne was diagnosed with Lupus and lost her leg in 1983, lost both legs in 1998. Vivienne was always a fighter for the needs of persons with disabilities, in 1984 she took the bull by the horns and started to make a difference in Prince George to help make our city more accessible for persons with disabilities and special needs.
In 1985 the Resource Centre was opened, and the rest is history. Handy Circle Resource Society continues to put persons with disabilities and special needs FIRST, and help make a difference in Prince George.
This story brings back so many memories of the struggles people with disabilities have and the struggles they overcame. Handy Circle Resource Society started small and exploded to what we are now, from a kitchen table to a Resource Centre that welcomes all types of disabilities, without proof, only need.
We have people coming into office telling us they are so appreciated we are here, and they can come to get help without going through other hoops
Handy Circle Resource Society finds the resources and refers them to the correct resources .when someone says they need help we will provide the help, we provide information that is available for persons with disabilities and special needs their family and friends. The support we provide at the resource center is their lifeline to the community; it provides them with skills and information that they may need to help enhance their lives.
Provide a medium for persons with disabilities and special needs to voice their concerns and to discuss issues of relevance to them.
To establish an Independent Living Resource Centre to be operated by and for persons with disabilities and special needs.
Promote public awareness of the needs of the disabled
Provide peer counseling, Information, and referral services for special needs.
To maximize self-determination of Persons with Disabilities in the community by organizing workshops/ seminars/ conferences on topics such as financial security, housing, transportation, and self-help skills, etc., and to promote social and recreational interaction.
Handy Circle also provides free Ramps (STOPGAP) to Businesses in Prince George, so persons with disabilities can go to their Businesses (shopping etc. We have Volunteers that build the Ramps, and Home Depo now provides the supplies.
We are also connected with The Cando Committee, we help organize a big Awareness Event every year to say thank you to Persons with Disabilities and Special Needs for their accomplishments throughout the year
The society is presently operating an Information Resource Centre which provides information on programs and services in the community of Prince George that are available to people with disabilities and special needs, their family and friends
