Exploring and Uncovering the Layers of Play

Please join us for our Early Learning Summer Institute on Monday, August 28th from 8:30 am - 2:30 pm at the Laurel Packinghouse to learn alongside one another as we explore and uncover the layers of play through an inquiry based and trauma-informed lens. Together we will explore a continuum of five pedagogical strategies for play-based learning found in the BC Ministry of Education's Play Today Handbook (pg. 38) and make connections with the BC Ministry of Education's Early Learning Framework (ages 0-8).

Dr. Deborah MacNamara will help us to begin in a good way by grounding our deeper why in neuroscience and research around the importance of play in creating joyful learning experiences that nurture the holistic well-being of children. Ana Valle Rivera of Early Years Thriving will then guide our morning through a trauma-informed approach to play, making connections with both Ministry documents and honouring the diverse and deep funds of knowledge within the room through opportunities for meaningful collaborative dialogue.

In the afternoon, we'll explore tangible examples of the five different types of play from Play Today in more depth and lean into how we might design responsive, holistic and play-based learning opportunities for children using beautiful, enticing materials connected to each one. Our intention is to collaboratively inspire and ignite one another's interests in how we might intentionally offer meaningful play-based learning opportunities connected to the Early Learning Framework, Play Today, and the BC Curriculum that notice, name, and nurture children's inherent gifts and interests.
