Kitchener-Waterloo Mamas for Mamas Menstrual Support Campaign

Did you know girls and women represent 49% of the individuals who access Canadian food banks each month? That’s about 430,000 individuals who not only need access to food but also access to items like period products.  Some of those women are mothers, who not only get their periods but who also have recently given birth and are experiencing postpartum bleeding (this type of bleeding can last up to six weeks). These are shocking statistics of period poverty that affect women in Canada, it makes us incredibly sad that some women don’t have the luxury of having access to products that many other women, take for granted. Period products shouldn’t be a luxury or a privilege. They are a basic human right and necessity.

When donating items to shelters and drives, most think of food and clothing first. Sadly, period products are often neglected and there’s a huge need for them. Those unable to afford or access period products will often resort to lining their underwear with socks, towels, or newspaper. Not only is this incredibly uncomfortable, but also unhygienic and a risk for infection.

1 in 4 Canadian women have to choose between buying food or period products.

Over the next few months, Bloomm Agency and Mamas for Mamas K-W will be collecting unopened boxes of pads, tampons, incontinence briefs (they make great postpartum pads), menstrual cups, and panty liners to donate to Mamas for Mamas - KW Branch to support Ontario Chapters. 

Mamas for Mamas is a national charitable organization that supports mothers and caregivers in crisis by providing ongoing support to individuals and families facing various poverty-related struggles.
