Our Soroptimist Message

As Soroptimists, our mission is to “transform the lives and status of women and girls through education, empowerment and enabling opportunities.”

Founded in 1921, we are a global women’s service organization with members in 122 countries, with grassroots projects that help women and girls achieve their individual and collective potential, realize aspirations and have an equal voice in communities worldwide.

This event has been designed to introduce you to an amazing group of women who are dedicated to serving the needs of women and girls, and to celebrate the women and girls who have overcome some incredible challenges to improve their lives. This year, WE are faced with challenges that have affected our lives and have made us respond to our “new” normal in new ways.

Our collective impact is universal … we come together as a global force of women to share our stories of challenges, successes and inspiration. We may be in various stages of isolation, but we are NOT alone. Join us on July 25th and see how we collectively can make a difference in any community in which we might live, and how we can use our equal voice to achieve strong, peaceful communities worldwide.

Sharon Fisher

President, Soroptimist International

Sharon began her term in January, 2020 just in time to see the world change, as we heard about the spread of the virus we now know as COVID-19.  With active Soroptimist clubs in 122 countries, it was moving to witness Soroptimists around the globe responding to the pandemic in so many creative ways.

Sharon's Presidents Appeal, Road to Equality, will address vulnerable women and girls at risk of being left behind due to gender based violence and harmful traditional practices.

“As we celebrate our 100th Anniversary in 2021, let us dream we can achieve a more Gender Equal society by overcoming barriers preventing women and girls from reaching their full potential.”

Sharon is a charter member of SI of the Langley’s and resides in the Tri-Cities where she serves as a Senior Director for an organization creating awareness and prevention of Elder Abuse in communities across the Province of BC.

YVONNE HOGENES established Malary’s Fashion Network in Cloverdale (5755-176 Street) 20 years ago. Malary’s has always championed local Vancouver designers and Canadian content overall. It allows Yvonne to work closely with the designers to offer optimal service and care for her clients. Yvonne’s goal is to offer the Ultimate Shopping Experience to every customer.

Yvonne created and designed the TAB Custom-Fitted Bras 16 years ago and 8 years ago she launched the FIRMA ENERGYWEAR collection. Yvonne’s garments provide significant health benefits to the wearer while still looking and feeling fashionable. These products are where “Health Meets Fashion!"

Yvonne was awarded the Business Person of the Year Award from the Surrey Board of Trade in 2004 and the Women’s Entrepreneurship Award from the Surrey Board of Trade in 2010 and again in 2018. She also received the Ruby Award from Soroptimist International of Surrey-Delta in 2018 for 20+ years of outstanding contributions to women and girls in our community.

Yvonne has continuously worked in her community on many boards and organizations to give back. On Dec 1, 2014 Yvonne opened the doors of Inn for Women Boutique in Cloverdale (right across the street from Malary’s Fashion Network). This “Chic Second Hand Boutique” is a not-for-profit enterprise which supports women and their families in Surrey and beyond who are striving every day for freedom from domestic violence, addictions, trauma and poverty.

Yvonne is a proud member of Soroptimist International Surrey/Delta since 2018. She loves how this global organization of women volunteers, from all ages and backgrounds link arms to promote and champion equality for ALL women around the world.

“These are the projects that truly motivate me,” says Yvonne. “I’ve been blessed to be surrounded by a like-minded team, and we’ve been able to achieve successes well beyond the monetary. We work toward making a difference in every area of life we can. And that has been the most gratifying.”

Our Award Programs

Our awards programs provide cash awards and/or recognition for women and girls in our community who are returning to school, doing extraordinary things, and contributing to the betterment of our community:

  • Live Your Dream Award financially supports women in our community who want to obtain the skills, training or education necessary to improve their employment status and standard of living for themselves and their family. Past recipients, many of whom have overcome enormous obstacles including poverty, domestic violence, and drug/alcohol abuse, have used the awards to offset costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education.

  • Violet Richardson Award is a recognition program for young women 14-17, and the award is given to a local girl whose volunteer activities make the community and world a better place. Half of her cash award goes to her, and half goes to her charity of choice.

  • Ruby Award is given to a local woman who best represents the values of Soroptimists and contributes to improving the lives of women and children in Surrey/Delta. As part of her award a financial donation is made to a local charity of her choice.
