Description

A common notion about crows and ravens is that they are attracted to shiny objects – the inspiration for this piece called Myth Informed - but that's only partially true. There are many stories of these birds offering shiny objects as gifts to one another or to humans who have fed them or helped them in some way. These stories have not been verified, however.

Crows and ravens have historically captured our imaginations. Today, they are known for their complex social behaviours, memory, and problem-solving abilities. But in myths and legends throughout the world, corvids symbolize death and omen, and alternatively, wisdom, mischief, and fortune. They are both maligned and revered.

Johanna Kendall studied fine art at UVic and Victoria College of Art, and has a BSc in Environmental Sciences from UBC. Her art practice includes acrylic and oil painting, pencil and ink drawing, sculpture and photography. Johanna spends most of her free time outside exploring Greater Victoria’s parks, trails and natural surroundings.
