Martha's Story

I was married to my husband for 15 years before my children and I finally left. My husband was very controlling. The bank

account was only his name and he would only give me a weekly allowance for groceries. Sometimes, the allowance wasn’t enough. When we arrived at Yellow Brick House just before the holiday season, the staff gave me some gift cards. I asked if this was my allowance for food purchases. When they told me that it was so I could buy my children’s Christmas presents I wept. I had never been able to pick them out myself. It was a humble holiday season in the shelter, but the smiles on our faces had never been brighter.
