Haircuts for Health Care

Problem with a fancy haircut is that we don’t have the skills needed - at least I don't! Much simpler just to go for a buzz cut, perhaps? I've been there only once before - when I was 6 or 7 years old, my older brother told the barber that I wanted a buzz cut (I had no idea what that meant) and I was rather upset at the result! So not a positive memory but I’ve moved on. ;-)

Now I'd like to make a better memory. The more you donate, the shorter the hair gets - and I'm aiming for a buzz cut for sure!

I am a strong believer in making Okanagan College buildings sustainable and the new Health Science building is being constructed to the WELL Building Standard as we once again push the envelop in the Okanagan. Combined with the current health care crisis, it is even more important to get this building completed and to see it properly equipped to deliver the high level of health care training that our community needs. Our students will thank you!

Every chop, snip and buzz will help raise vital funds to open the doors on a state-of-the-art new Health Science Centre at Okanagan College.

You will receive a tax receipt from the Okanagan College Foundation for your donation by email.

Yikes!

Hmm, looks like my boys are getting pretty eager to cut my hair.

The long and short of it...

From the longest hair I've had in 40 years to the shortest hair I've had in 50 years! Thanks to Ian at Opus Salon from rescuing me from my boys!

Thanks to all who have supported the Haircuts for Healthcare initiative - your contributions will have a really positive impact for our students and our communities!

Join Us & Dare a Friend:

We need you to join us! There are lots of ways to get involved:

1) Cut and fundraise

Create your own fundraising page, and ask your friends to donate towards a creative new "do." Don't forget to show off the results and dare a friend to cut their hair.

2) Just cut

Donate the equivalent of your regular haircut or treatment. Kids cut options available. When you're done, make sure to dare a friend to do the same.

3) Donate

Love the cause but not ready to cut your hair? You can support the training of health care professionals by donating online here.

4) Sponsor us

Contact foundation@okanagan.bc.ca for details of our sponsorship opportunities.

A Community Challenge

“When the campaign reaches $10,000, I will personally donate $5,000,” says Okanagan College President Jim Hamilton.

While Okanagan College President Jim Hamilton jokes that he doesn't have much hair to inspire people to donate, he still wants to thank the community for coming together in support of education for the next generation of health care heroes. Read more here.

Social media examples:

It's been more than a month, and my hair needs a serious cut. I've set a fundraising goal of $200 and if I reach it, I will give the clippers to my daughter who can shave my head any way she sees fit! All funds raised will go to the Okanagan College Foundation to help them open a new Health Sciences Centre and train health care professionals for our community. Help me reach my goal! I dare (enter friend's name) to cut their hair too!

My hair is out of control! Seeing I can't visit my hairdresser, I've decided to take matters into my own hands while supporting a good cause. I'm donating the price of my haircut to the Okanagan College Foundation to help them open a new Health Sciences Centre and train health care heroes for our community. I dare (enter friends's name) to chop their locks for a good cause! #haircutsforhealthcare @Okanagan College Foundation

Keep supporting local salons

While salons may not be able to cut your hair in-person, many are offering virtual advice and product delivery. Please support them and be sure to stay loyal once this is over. When we get through this, we will need their talent and help more than ever!

Cut at your own risk!

As a result of COVID-19, there are many online tutorials on how to cut your hair. Make sure to do your research and go slowly. Okanagan College Foundation accepts no liability for failed cuts or injuries resulting from participation.
